The money

What you pay, and what you must prove you have.

Two different things, kept apart on purpose: a bill you pay, and a balance a visa officer needs to see that never gets spent.

What you pay

Tuition, per year

€3,943.04

about PKR 1,267,000

Why this figure, and not a lower one

Italian state fees usually scale with an assessed household indicator. Where the call states one figure it appears above; where it states a scale, this page says so rather than averaging it.

Politecnico di Milano does not price degrees individually. One all inclusive contribution covers any programme and is scaled by ISEE, the Italian measure of household income and assets, from 157.04 euro at the bottom of the scale to 3,943.04 euro at the top. The figure here is the top, because the university states that an international student in the reserved non EU category, admitted with a first level qualification obtained abroad and holding no scholarship, pays the maximum whatever ISEE says.

The degree

About this degree.

A two year Master of Science in energy engineering, taught in English, covering thermodynamic conversion of energy, the environmental effects of energy production, power generation, oil and gas, renewables and HVAC design across seven tracks. It suits engineering graduates who already have a grounding in applied thermodynamics and energy machines and who want to work on power plants, energy systems or building climate control.

Energy Engineering at Politecnico di Milano is a Laurea Magistrale, the Italian second cycle degree that is equivalent to a Master of Science. It runs for two years and is taught in English. The university lists two campuses for it, Milano Bovisa and Piacenza.

The university's full description

The programme trains energy engineers to handle the thermodynamic conversion of different forms of energy, the environmental effects that come with producing energy, and indoor climate control and thermal comfort. Politecnico states that graduates gain a solid understanding of the technological and operational aspects of systems and components, of methods for energy and economic modelling, and the analytical skills to keep an overall view of how energy is produced, transmitted and used, together with the economic and environmental implications of that.

The Master builds on the technical background of a bachelor degree in applied thermodynamics and energy machines and systems. Specialist topics named by the university include technologies for controlling pollutants from combustion and mitigating the greenhouse effect, advanced thermodynamic cycles for energy conversion, design methodologies for HVAC systems and indoor environmental quality, and complex design problems involving heat exchangers and thermal machines. The university notes these competences also require openness to power systems, chemical engineering, and management and economic methods.

The degree is structured into seven tracks. The published list is Green Power Systems, Oil and Gas Production, Power Generation, which splits in the second year into Energy Systems for Transition and Propulsion and Power, Energy for Development, Energy Use and Built Environment, and Renewables and Environmental Sustainability at the Piacenza campus.

Admission is not open. Politecnico publishes a fixed number of places for each Master programme, and for Energy Engineering at Milano Bovisa the figure for academic year 2026/2027 is 320 places, of which 50 are reserved for students outside the EU. The Piacenza track lists 40 places, of which 20 are for students outside the EU. There is no entrance examination. Applicants with a foreign qualification are assessed on the file they upload, and the university evaluates their previous academic career against the engineering subjects the programme expects.

After the Master, Politecnico says graduates may take the State Examination required for enrolment in Section A of the Professional Register of Engineers in the industrial engineering sector, and may enrol in the PhD Programme in Energy and Nuclear Science and Technology.

Application windows as published on 11 September 2026: Academic year 2026/2027, engineering programmes, applicants with a foreign qualification. First call for the September 2026 intake closed 1 December 2025 at 11.59pm CET. Second call closed 26 February 2026 at 11.59pm CET. A further call open only to EEA students and non EEA residents in Italy ran 27 February to 31 March 2026. The general call for the February 2027 intake, which is the second semester, closed 18 June 2026 at 11.59pm CEST. Every 2026/2027 call had therefore closed by 11 September 2026, and Politecnico di Milano had not yet published the 2027/2028 calendar on that date.

The plan is published one table per track, for academic year 2026/2027. These rows are the EEG Green Power System track at Milano Bovisa. The Teaching Rules list six tracks in total: EEG Green Power Systems, EEH Oil and Gas Production, EEP Power Generation (activated only in year 1 and splitting in year 2 into EST Energy Systems for Transition and PRP Propulsion and Power), EES Energy for Development, EIT Energy use and built environment, and EEE Renewables and Environmental Sustainability on the Piacenza campus. Each year is built from credit groups, not a fixed list of every course. Year 1 has six groups worth 10, 10, 8, 8, 8 and 16 credits; year 2 has groups worth 16, 16, 8 and 20 credits. A student fills each group, so the elective rows here are options inside a group rather than courses everyone takes. Rows marked core are the only option in their group. The 8 credit group in year 2 is filled from three large baskets called S1, SOFT SKILLS and LABS; the lab rows above are the LABS basket, and the S1 and SOFT SKILLS baskets are on the source page but not repeated here. The source page also prints Italian language mirror sections of several English courses, and courses reserved to students enrolled in the ENHANCE Alliance programme, which are not repeated here either. The plan states that core courses must account for at least 48 credits and related courses for between 16 and 40 credits.

Asked about this programme

The questions this one gets.

I studied my bachelor in English in Pakistan. Do I still need IELTS for this MSc?

Not necessarily. Politecnico di Milano states that students who can prove English was the medium of instruction for their bachelor degree, for at least 3 years, are exempt from providing any English language certification. You must upload a document certified by your university confirming that at least 75% of the courses in your programme were taught in English. If you cannot get that letter, the accepted tests include IELTS Academic or General Training at 6 or above, TOEFL internet based at 78 or above for tests taken until 20 January 2026, and PTE Academic at an overall 59 or above. Duolingo is not on the accepted list.

My degree is a 2 year BSc followed by a 2 year MSc from a Pakistani university. Can I apply?

No. The country specific rule for Pakistan says, in the university's own words, we do not accept 2+2 year bachelor degrees, we accept only 4-year continuous bachelor programmes, in line with HEC new bachelor's degree policy. Politecnico also sets a minimum GPA of 3.3 out of 4 for Pakistani applicants and states that the requirements including minimum GPA are strict and no exceptions will be considered. If your CGPA is below the minimum, the university says it will not proceed with the evaluation of your candidature.

What will this degree actually cost me per year?

Plan for the maximum, which is 3,943.04 euro a year for a standard study plan of 46 to 74 ECTS. Politecnico di Milano works the fee out from your ISEE, the Italian household income and assets indicator, and an Italian family with an ISEE up to 22,000 euro pays only 157.04 euro. That low band is not normally open to you. The university states that non EU international students admitted to a Master's programme with a first level qualification obtained abroad, and holding no scholarship, pay the maximum amount, and that the maximum still applies even if they submit an ISEE or ISEEU parificato. You pay 880.04 euro on enrolment and the balance in May. A Politecnico or Diritto allo Studio scholarship changes this.

How many seats are there for a student from outside the EU?

For academic year 2026/2027 the Milano Bovisa version of Energy Engineering lists 320 places, of which 50 are for extra UE students, meaning students outside the EU who are not treated as equivalent to EU nationals. The Renewables and Environmental Sustainability track at the Piacenza campus lists 40 places, of which 20 are for extra UE students. These are the published caps you are competing within, so applying in the first call rather than the last is worth doing.

Is there an entrance exam or interview for Energy Engineering?

No. Admission is decided on the file you upload. The programme page states that applicants holding a foreign qualification equivalent to a bachelor degree may apply provided they have an adequate background in fundamental engineering subjects and disciplines relevant to Energy Engineering, and that admission is subject to an eligibility evaluation of the applicant's previous academic career. The GRE General Test is optional for engineering applicants, no minimum score has been set, and scores are sent to Politecnico with code 0495. A letter of recommendation, a letter of motivation and detailed course descriptions are also optional and the university says they can improve your chances.

One programme, one university, once a year.

That is what Universitaly allows. Three questions tell you where you stand before you spend that choice: the degree level, what the visa wants in the bank, and how much calendar is left.
