The degree
About this degree.
A six year single cycle medical degree taught entirely in English at Tor Vergata in Rome, ending in the qualification needed to practise as a doctor in Italy. It suits students who can pass the national medical admission test and who want hospital based clinical training from the first year.
Medicine and Surgery at Tor Vergata is a single cycle master's degree in class LM-41. The course code is N39. It runs for six years. The School of Medicine and Surgery teaches it, through the Department of Clinical Sciences and Translational Medicine. The programme page states that the course is held entirely in English. Italian language courses are offered alongside it so that students can speak to patients.
The university's full description
The degree carries 360 ECTS credits. At least 60 of those come from vocational training. The course is organised in 12 semesters and 36 integrated courses. One credit means 25 hours of student work. That is normally 8 class hours, or 12 laboratory or tutorial hours, or 20 hours of supervised study. One vocational credit means 20 hours of supervised practice in small groups plus 5 hours of individual review.
Admission is capped. For 2026/2027 the call offers 65 places to EU candidates and to non EU candidates resident in Italy. It offers 20 places to candidates resident abroad who need a study visa. It offers a further 320 places to visa applicants who sit the test at the Tirana venue in Albania. Entry is by a written test set by the Ministry of University and Research. The test is set for Tuesday 29 September 2026 and lasts 100 minutes. There are 60 questions: 4 on reading and general knowledge, 5 on logical reasoning, 23 on biology, 15 on chemistry and 13 on physics and mathematics. A correct answer scores 1.5 points, a wrong answer loses 0.4 points, and a blank scores nothing. The maximum is 90 points.
Pakistan is one of the countries listed in Tabella A of the call, where the test is held. A Pakistani applicant does not have to travel to Italy to sit it.
Italian matters later in the course. The teaching plan states that students who do not speak Italian must reach B2 in Italian to attend Clinical Practice IV. Italian Language Competencies at B2 is one of the exams to pass before enrolling in the fourth year.
Two health records are due within 60 days of enrolment. They are a Mantoux tuberculin test carried out at a national health service facility, and a hepatitis B vaccination certificate.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL to apply?
Not for this degree. The call publishes no English certificate requirement and no minimum score. The rule that applies is the university wide one on the Online English Language Exam page. You meet it with a B2 certificate from a recognised awarding body, or with official evidence that English was the medium of instruction in your previous studies. If you have neither, the Language Centre runs its own online exam, and a B2 pass produces a statement you upload to Universitaly. Duolingo is not accepted anywhere on the Tor Vergata site. IELTS and TOEFL do appear in the call, in Allegato 3, but only as a tie break between candidates on equal marks.
Can I sit the admission test in Pakistan?
Yes. Pakistan is on Tabella A of the call, the list of countries where the test is held. The test is the same paper everywhere and starts at 13:30 Rome time, adjusted to the local time zone. You choose your test venue when you register on Universitaly, and that choice cannot be changed after registration closes.
What will the year cost me if my family income is in Pakistan?
2,656 euro. A household that earns abroad cannot obtain an ordinary ISEE, the Italian household income measure, so the Student Handbook 2026/2027 sets a fixed annual all inclusive contribution instead. Medicine and Surgery is one of the programmes named at 2,500 euro. On top of that sit the Lazio regional tax of 140 euro and stamp duty of 16 euro, which the handbook says are due in any case. If you do file an ISEE parificato you move onto a scale instead, where this degree sits in contribution class 5 and the ordinary rate runs up to 5,250 euro.
How many places are open to someone applying from Pakistan?
20 at the Rome campus, in the quota for candidates resident abroad who need a study visa, plus 320 in a separate quota for visa applicants who sit the test at the Tirana venue in Albania. The other 65 places go to EU candidates and to non EU candidates already resident in Italy. In the quota for candidates resident abroad the minimum score of 20 points does not apply. You are eligible with any score above zero, but a candidate who answers nothing is left out of the ranking.
Is the course really all in English?
The teaching is. The programme page states the course is held entirely in English. Italian is still needed for the clinical years. The teaching plan says students who do not speak Italian must reach B2 in Italian to attend Clinical Practice IV, and that Italian Language Competencies at B2 is among the exams to pass before enrolling in the fourth year. Italian language courses are provided for this.
Can I still apply for 2026/2027?
No. Test registration on Universitaly closed at 15:00 Rome time on 9 September 2026, and the call says that deadline cannot be waived. The test is on 29 September 2026 and the national ranking is published on 26 October 2026. A separate call, published by 31 December 2026, handles transfers into years after the first. The 2027/2028 call is not out yet.
