Graduates in Fisica, class L-30, from any Italian university enter the Laurea Magistrale in Fisica directly. Every other degree is assessed by the Physics Department Council, which decides how the student may enter and may require additional study first.

A two year, English taught master's in astrophysics and space science at Tor Vergata University of Rome, taught by the Department of Physics with researchers from INAF, INFN and ASI. It suits physics, astronomy, mathematics or space engineering graduates who want research training in stellar astrophysics, cosmology, space instrumentation and astronomical data analysis.
Astrophysics and Space Science is taught in English at Tor Vergata University of Rome. The course page lists it as a Master Degree in the School of Mathematics, Physics and Natural Sciences, Department of Physics. It runs for two years. The page says the curriculum is designed with research institutions in the Tor Vergata area, including INAF, INFN and ASI, and that researchers from those institutions teach on it. It also lists practical work in technological development, data analysis and image processing.
The university's full description
Two routes carry this name at Tor Vergata and they are not the same thing. The route open to new applicants is the curriculum Astrophysics and Space Science inside the Laurea Magistrale in Fisica, degree class LM-17 R. The Physics Department lists it as one of three curricula taught in English. The second route is a separate degree in class LM-58 R, built for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master called MASS with the University of Belgrade, the University of Bremen and Université Côte d'Azur. The LM-58 course guide for 2026/2027 states that no new enrolments will be opened that year, because the Erasmus Mundus funding period ends. The LM-17 course guide says the same thing in its own words. A student applying for 2026/2027 therefore applies to the LM-17 curriculum.
The taught plan for 2026/2027 is fixed. Year one, first semester: Mathematical Methods for Physics 8 cfu, Quantum Mechanics 8 cfu, Modern Astrophysics 6 cfu, Radiative Processes 6 cfu. Year one, second semester: Relativity and Cosmology 6 cfu, Astrophysical Techniques 8 cfu, Big data, Machine Learning and Astrophysical Data 4 cfu, one choice from Lista 1 worth 6 cfu, 6 cfu of free choice, and Lingua Inglese (Livello C1) 2 cfu. Year two, first semester: Numerical Methods for Astrophysics 6 cfu, two choices from Lista 2 worth 6 cfu each, 6 cfu of free choice, and 6 cfu of thesis. Year two, second semester is 30 cfu of thesis. The total is 120 credits, of which 36 are the thesis.
Access is open. The course page gives the access type as Open with curriculum evaluation. The Macroarea di Scienze page states in Italian that access is free, with a compulsory application for assessment of curricular requirements and of personal preparation. There is no entrance exam. The degree programme council rules on your documents and issues the clearance you need to enrol. Lessons for 2026/2027 start on 28 September 2026.
The Student Handbook for 2026/2027 does not name this programme in any of the higher contribution classes, so contribution class 1 applies. That is an all inclusive contribution from 0 euro up to a maximum of 2,270 euro a year at the ordinary rate, set by the ISEE household income indicator. A student who does not submit a valid ISEE is charged the maximum for the band. The regional tax and stamp duty of 156 euro is due in every case. Is this an open access course?
Yes. The course page gives the access type as Open with curriculum evaluation. The Italian pages call it accesso libero. There is no entrance exam. You send an application, the degree programme council checks your curricular requirements and your personal preparation, and then issues the clearance you need to enrol.
Do I need IELTS?
Not necessarily. Tor Vergata accepts official evidence that English was the medium of instruction for your previous studies, in place of a certificate. If you have neither a B2 certificate nor that evidence, you can sit the university Language Centre online exam. Duolingo is not accepted.
What will it cost me each year?
The Student Handbook for 2026/2027 does not name this programme in a higher contribution class, so contribution class 1 applies: an all inclusive contribution from 0 euro up to a maximum of 2,270 euro at the ordinary rate. Is there an application fee?
Yes. The 2026/2027 admission notice and the international application procedure both state a 30 euro assessment fee, paid through PagoPA. It is not refundable. Students with a disability of 66 per cent or more, and graduates of Tor Vergata with a final mark of at least 100 out of 110, are exempt.
What is the difference between the LM-17 curriculum and the LM-58 MASS degree?
The LM-58 degree was created for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master called MASS, run with Belgrade, Bremen and Université Côte d'Azur. Its 2026/2027 guide states that no new enrolments will be opened, because the Erasmus Mundus funding period ends. The curriculum with the same name inside the Laurea Magistrale in Fisica, class LM-17 R, is open and is what a 2026/2027 applicant enrols in.
