About this degree.
A six year single-cycle medical degree taught entirely in English at Sapienza University of Rome, leading to the Italian qualification to practise as a doctor. It suits school leavers who want a full clinical training in Europe and can pass a national written entrance test in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.
Medicine and Surgery "F" is a single-cycle master's degree at Sapienza University of Rome. It runs for six years and is taught entirely in English. The degree class is LM-41 and the programme code is 33454. Lessons are conventional and in person in Rome. The degree requires 360 university credits (CFU). One CFU is 12.5 hours of classroom teaching, or 25 hours of internship and elective activity. Sixty CFU are set aside for practical training.
The university's full description
The first two years cover Human Anatomy, Biochemistry, Human Physiology and Basic Medical Scientific Methods. Microbiology and Pre-Clinical Scientific Methods follow in the second year. The third year adds Immunology and Immunopathology, Laboratory Medicine, Pathology and Pathophysiology, and Clinical Scientific Methods. The fourth and fifth years cover Pathological Anatomy and Clinical-Pathologic Correlations, Diagnostic Imaging, Pharmacology and toxicology, and five Applied Pathology blocks arranged by body system. The sixth year covers Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Internal Medicine and General Surgery II, and Emergency medicine and surgery. Clinical exposure starts early. Students attend the wards of Policlinico Umberto I University Hospital and Sant'Andrea Hospital. From the second year students may use a simulation laboratory (skill lab) after taking the BLS course. From the third year students learn semeiological procedures, both on each other and on patients with organ-specific diseases. A professional actor works as a simulated patient with third year students in Italian, following pre-structured checklists. From the fourth year students attend hospital wards for two consecutive weeks in emergency-related areas. The tutor to student ratio in those weeks is 1:1, or at most 1:2. From the fifth year the practical training internship is joined by an assessed internship.
Teaching is in English but the clinical setting is Italian. First year students may attend Italian language courses at the University Language Centre (CLA) towards A1 and A2 level, after taking a placement test.
Admission is restricted and decided by a written test. The content is identical across Italy and is set by the Ministry of University and Research. For the 2026-2027 academic year the test is held on 29 September 2026, at Sapienza and at locations abroad. The test has 60 questions and lasts 100 minutes. It sets 4 questions on reading skills, 5 on logical reasoning and problems, 23 on biology, 15 on chemistry and 13 on physics and mathematics. A correct answer scores 1.5 points and an unanswered question scores nothing. Each wrong answer loses 0.4 points. The programme offered 52 places to EU applicants and 13 places to non-EU applicants resident abroad.
An English certificate is not required to be admitted. The certificate list in Annex 1 of the call is used only to separate candidates who finish on the same score. Anyone who attended a school where English was the language of instruction for at least one academic year is automatically recognised as holding the certificate. That clause names no country.
Fees depend on where a student declares income. The standard annual fee for the faculties that run this degree is 2,924 euro. Applicants who file income tax returns outside Italy cannot submit an ISEE declaration and pay a fixed annual amount by country band instead. Band A is 300 euro, Band B is 700 euro and Band C is 1,500 euro. Pakistan is listed in Band A. A regional tax of 140 euro and a stamp duty of 16 euro are added.
Within 60 days of paying the first instalment, students must take a Mantoux tuberculin test and be vaccinated against viral hepatitis B. Both are done at the local health authority.

- Entry into the National Health Service requires a specialisation, which is obtained by enrolling in and attending courses at specialisation schools, while entry into the General Medical Practitioner rankings requires attendance at Regional General Medical Training Schools.
- Admission to specialisation schools is gained by passing a national examination, while admission to regional schools is gained by passing a regional examination.

Do I need IELTS to apply?
No. The call for applications does not set a minimum English score for this degree. A certificate from the Annex 1 list only matters if two candidates finish the test on the same score, and then the one holding a certificate is placed higher. If you did at least one academic year of school in English, the call automatically treats you as holding the certificate, and it names no country.
Is Duolingo accepted?
No. Duolingo does not appear anywhere in this programme's call for applications. The Annex 1 list names Cambridge English, City and Guilds (Pitman), Edexcel and Pearson PTE General, EDI (LCCIEB), IELTS, Trinity College London and TOEFL ETS.
What will I pay in tuition?
The standard annual fee for the faculties running this degree is 2,924 euro. If you file income tax returns outside Italy you cannot submit an ISEE declaration, so you pay a fixed annual amount set by country band instead. Pakistan is in Band A, which is 300 euro a year. A regional tax of 140 euro and a 16 euro stamp duty are added on top.
How many places are there for students from outside the EU?
Thirteen. The call reserves 13 places for citizens of non-EU countries who are permanently resident abroad and need an entry visa, and 52 places for Italian citizens, other EU citizens and non-EU citizens holding a valid Italian residence permit.
Is there a minimum school grade?
The call sets none. What it sets is a test score floor for entering the ranking: 20 or higher if you are an Italian or EU citizen or hold an Italian residence permit, and above zero if you are a non-EU citizen resident abroad. A score below 30 can also trigger extra coursework in biology or chemistry, which must be cleared in the first year.
Is the degree recognised outside Italy?
The programme page states that following ANVUR's accreditation by the World Federation for Medical Education, medical degrees awarded by Italian universities will be recognized by all bodies that are part of the WFME. Recognition to practise in a specific country is decided by that country's regulator, not by Sapienza.
