Data Science

The university describes the programme as a joint initiative of the i3S Faculty combining four departments: the Department of Computer Science (DI), the Department of Computer, Control and Management Engineering (DIAG), the Department of Information Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunications (DIET) and the Department of Statistics (DSS). The presentation page says the degree brings together Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Economic and Organizational Sciences. It says all courses are taught in English. It says attendance is compulsory only for laboratory and practical activities.

The published 2026/2027 study plan sets these compulsory modules. Year 1 has ALGORITHMIC METHODS OF DATA MINING AND LABORATORY (9 CFU), Fundamentals of Statistical Learning (12 CFU, split into Fundamentals of Statistical Learning I at 9 CFU and Fundamentals of Statistical Learning II at 3 CFU, run across both semesters), Fundamentals of Data Science (9 CFU) and Fundamentals of Networking and Signal Processing (9 CFU). Two Elective course slots of 6 CFU each sit in year 1 semester 2 and year 2 semester 1. Year 2 ends with Final exam Data Science (24 CFU) and Additional Skills for Career Development (3 CFU).

The plan then sets four optional groups. Optional group A requires 6 CFU and offers Optimization methods for Data Science, Stochastic Processes for Data Science and Statistical Machine Learning. Optional group B requires 18 CFU and offers CLOUD COMPUTING, DATA PRIVACY AND SECURITY, Signal Processing for Machine Learning, BIG DATA COMPUTING, Graph mining and applications, Natural Language Processing and Text Mining, ADVANCED MACHINE LEARNING AND COMPUTER VISION, Network Science and Complex Systems, Smart Environments and Cyber Physical Spaces and DATA MANAGEMENT FOR DATA SCIENCE. Optional group C requires 6 CFU and offers QUANTITATIVE MODELS FOR ECONOMIC ANALYSIS AND MANAGEMENT, Data Driven Economics, European Data Law in a Global Digital Economy and Economics of Network Industries. Optional group D requires 12 CFU and offers Big Data for Official Statistics, Geomatics and Geoinformation, Bioinformatics and Network Medicine, Digital Epidemiology and Precision Medicine, EARTH OBSERVATION DATA ANALYSIS, Neural Networks for Data Science, Economics and computation, Generative Models for Audio and Panel data modelling. Most optional modules carry 6 CFU. Economics and computation is marked ITA in the plan while every other module is marked ENG.

Admission is not by a capped competition. The Italian course catalogue page prints the access mode as Verifica dei requisiti e della preparazione personale, which means verification of requirements and of personal preparation. The call for applications publishes no number of places and no ranking list. The English version of the same catalogue page does not print the access field at all.

To be admitted you need a bachelor's degree or a three year university diploma, or a foreign qualification judged suitable. You need at least 90 university credits across the subject areas the call lists. You need English at CEFR B2 or above. The university sets a minimum GPA of 80 out of 100 for this programme. A GRE certificate is strongly recommended and counts as a positive element in the evaluation, but it is not required.

The personal preparation check has two parts. Part APP-a looks at your final bachelor's mark, your grade average and the relevance of your bachelor's curriculum, with particular attention to Mathematics, Probability and Computer Science. Part APP-b tests knowledge of Mathematics, Probability and Computer Science. Candidates who pass APP-a sit an online test and then an online interview with a Master's Committee. The programme's own enrolment page states that APP-b is treated as satisfied automatically for a candidate holding at least 12 credits in MAT/03 or MAT/05, 6 credits in MAT/06 and 6 credits in INF/01 or ING-INF/05.

English is proved by certificate. For this programme Sapienza accepts IELTS 5.5 or higher, TOEFL iBT 80 or higher, Cambridge English B2 First or higher, and Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English ISE II or higher. The waiver on this programme's own entry is limited by country. It covers native speakers of English, holders of an English taught diploma or degree from an accredited institution in the EU, EEA, Schengen, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States, and holders of an International Baccalaureate, GCSE or comparable certificate. Pakistan is not in that list, so a Pakistani applicant with an English medium Pakistani degree still has to submit a test score. The Duolingo English Test is not on the accepted list.

Fees. The pre-selection application fee is 30 euro for each application submitted, with a maximum of two applications per candidate per intake, and the university states that no waiver is available. Sapienza publishes full tuition for its bachelor's and master's programmes as 300 to 1500 euro per year, set by country of residence. The programme's own call adds a separate 10 euro fee, paid through Infostud, for the check of entry requirements.

Timing. The 2026-2027 pre-selection on the MoveIN platform closed on 15 May 2026 for candidates who need a visa and on 31 July 2026 for everyone else. The programme's own call for applications asks for the entry requirements check to be requested from 2 July 2026 and by one of these dates: 15 September 2026, which the call names as the only applicable date for applicants from non-EU countries who need a student visa, then 15 October 2026, 17 November 2026, 17 December 2026, and 14 January 2027 for Sapienza graduates and near graduates. A candidate abroad who needs a visa must already hold a letter of pre-acceptance, and Sapienza states that pre-acceptance letters are issued only through the MoveIN portal and through no agency.
