What the call asks for
A bachelor or first cycle degree equivalent to 180 ECTS credits, from a science field (Physics, Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Biology-Biochemistry, Engineering) or a humanities field (Archaeology, Conservation Science, Cultural Heritage Studies, Architecture, Art History).
Professionals in the museum or conservation sector may also apply, "providing they are holder of a Bachelor (I cycle) degree and possess an excellent academic background in the general fields of Archaeology-Museology-Conservation science-Cultural Heritage".
Candidates who will only obtain their first higher education degree at the end of the academic year before the edition starts may apply, on condition that they acquire the required degree before that edition begins.
Sapienza requires the minimum basic and characterising credits set in the ministerial table for degree class L-43: 36 CFU in the basic subject areas and 54 CFU in the characterising subject areas. For a qualification obtained abroad, Sapienza assesses its cultural affinity with those subject areas.
A good knowledge of written and spoken English, certified at CEFR level B2 or above.
An interview with the ARCHMAT selection committee, which may be held online. Only candidates who hold the curricular requirements reach it.

About this degree.
A two year Erasmus Mundus joint master in archaeometry, the science that identifies, dates and conserves archaeological materials. Sapienza is one of three universities that award the single joint diploma, so you study one semester in Portugal, one in Greece and one in Rome.
Archaeological Materials Science is a master's degree in degree class LM-11 at Sapienza University of Rome. Sapienza lists it under programme code 33600. It runs for two years and is worth 120 ECTS. It is taught in English. Lessons are in person. The programme is also called ARCHMAT.
The university's full description
It is an Erasmus Mundus joint master. Three universities award a single joint diploma: the University of Evora in Portugal, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece, and Sapienza in Rome. You will not spend the whole degree in Italy. The movement between the three countries is compulsory. Semester one is at Evora and carries 30 ECTS. Semester two is at Thessaloniki and carries 30 ECTS. Semester three is at Sapienza in Rome and carries 30 ECTS. Semester four is 30 ECTS of thesis work at one of the three universities.
The subject is archaeometry. Sapienza defines this as the physical, chemical, geological and biological sciences applied to the study of archaeological materials. The published modules teach how to characterise stone, glass, wood, fibres, ceramics, bricks, textiles and metals. The plan opens with Introduction to Archaeometry at 12 CFU and Advanced Scientific Methods in Archaeometry at 9 CFU. The plan carries a separate bridging module for each kind of applicant. Students from a humanities background take Basic Aspects of Science Applied to Archaeometry. Students from a science background take Excavation Methods Culture and Contexts in Archaeology. Almost every module is marked English. Smart Materials for Conservation in Archaeology is printed as an Italian taught option.
Sapienza does not run the admission for this degree. The ARCHMAT selection committee does, and the University of Evora coordinates it. You apply on the ARCHMAT application platform. You do not apply on Sapienza's MoveIn portal. The call opens in November each year and closes in March of the following year. The call for the 2026 to 2028 edition closed on 27 February 2026. No date has been published yet for the next call. Each edition starts in the second half of September.
Admission is competitive. Sapienza prints the access mode as verification of the requirements and of personal preparation. The consortium scores each application out of 100. The weights are academic and professional excellence 30, academic potential 20, research or work experience 20, the motivation letter 15, the recommendation letters 10 and language skills 5. Candidates who score below 60 out of 100 are not admitted. Shortlisted candidates sit an online interview. The consortium caps the cohort at 25 students and admits at most 2 candidates from any one country of origin.
The English rule for this degree is set by the ARCHMAT call and it is not the Sapienza university wide rule. The scores are higher. ARCHMAT asks for IELTS at an overall band of 6, or TOEFL iBT at 87, or a Cambridge certificate. The Sapienza university wide sheet asks for IELTS 5.5 and TOEFL iBT 80. The waiver is different too. Pakistan is on the ARCHMAT list of countries whose passport holders do not need an English test. The Sapienza university wide waiver does not include Pakistan. If you use the ARCHMAT waiver you must still supply a document proving that your university education was taught in English. A second route accepts proof of at least one year of English taught instruction at university level, with no country limit at all.
No current cost is published. Sapienza prints no tuition figure for this degree, because the consortium sets the participation cost. The ARCHMAT site publishes no participation cost for a current edition, and its Practical Information page is switched off. It publishes no application fee either. The 30 euro Sapienza application fee belongs to the MoveIn pre-selection portal, which this degree does not use.

Do I study the whole degree in Rome?
No. The movement between countries is compulsory. Semester one is at the University of Evora in Portugal, semester two is at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece, and semester three is at Sapienza in Rome. Semester four is thesis work at one of the three universities.
Do I need IELTS if I am from Pakistan?
The ARCHMAT call lists Pakistan among the countries whose passport holders do not need an English test. You still have to supply a document proving that your university education was taught in English. This is a programme rule. The Sapienza university wide waiver does not cover Pakistan, so do not rely on that one.
What IELTS or TOEFL score does this degree ask for?
