Classics

The programme covers the languages and literature of Greece and Rome, ancient history, classical archaeology, and the place of the Classics in later European culture. Sapienza states the programme is aimed at an international audience with little or no formal education in Classics. The first year introduces Greek and Latin through introductory modules. The second year goes deeper into Greek and Latin literature and the history of the ancient world. The third year adds core classical modules, related subjects and electives. The degree ends with a written final essay, discussed in English in front of a graduation commission. Sapienza notes that the Rome location is used for field trips, museum visits and library workshops.

Access is open with an entrance test that checks your knowledge. The Italian clause is Prova in ingresso per la verifica delle conoscenze. The call sets no minimum school grade and no ranked list of places. Every applicant sits the ENGLISH TEST HUMANITIES@HOME, an online test run by CISIA. A score below 12 out of 30 does not refuse you a place. It assigns an OFA in Academic English, which you clear during your first year by passing a remedial test or the Classical Archaeology exam worth 6 CFU. You may use an ENGLISH TOLC-E taken from 1 July 2024 instead, or a SAT taken from 1 January 2023. The SAT start date is set for this degree alone; the sister degree in Global Humanities in the same call accepts a SAT from 1 January 2021.

Separately from that test, you need proof of English at CEFR level B2. For this degree the call names four certificates: IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 80, Cambridge English B2 First or higher, and Trinity College London ISE level II or higher. The call states that an application without this proof will not be accepted. This list is narrower than the university wide sheet, which also names PTE. Duolingo is not accepted.

The call gives a second route in place of a certificate. It covers native English speakers, holders of an English taught diploma or degree from an accredited institution in the EU, EEA, Schengen area, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States, and holders of an International Baccalaureate Diploma or a General Certificate of Education. A Pakistani school or university does not appear on that country list, so a medium of instruction letter from Pakistan does not waive the requirement. The GCE line in the call carries no country limit, so a student holding GCE O levels or A levels should ask the faculty in writing whether that line covers them before relying on it.

Sapienza charges students who cannot file an Italian ISEE a fixed contribution set by country band. Pakistan is listed in Band A, which is 300 euro for the year, paid in three instalments of 90, 105 and 105 euro. A stamp duty of 16 euro and the regional tax are added on top. Students who are tax resident in Italy pay on their ISEE instead.

For the 2026-2027 year, non EU applicants living abroad had to pass the MoveIn pre-selection by 15 May 2026, then register on Universitaly by 30 June 2026. Enrolment is completed by paying the first instalment between 1 September 2026 and 5 November 2026. The pre-selection application costs 30 euro, with no waiver. The English test costs 45 euro and is not refunded.
