Physics of Fundamental Interactions and Experimental Techniques

The department calls the curriculum research oriented. It covers particle, astro-particle and nuclear physics and the research and development of particle and radiation detectors. The university page adds modern detectors, diagnostic techniques such as PET and CT built on radiation and nuclear physics technologies, innovative materials, and neutron sciences with collaborations at ISIS at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the United Kingdom and the European Spallation Source. The curriculum is designed with research bodies near the Tor Vergata campus, INFN, CNR, ENEA and ASI, and researchers from those bodies teach several of the classes.

The published plan sets Mathematical Methods for Physics, Particle Physics and Nuclear and Hadronic Physics in the first semester. Quantum Field Theory, Astroparticle Physics and Gravitation follow in the second. Laboratory of Fundamental Interactions sits in the third semester, the Master Thesis runs across the third and fourth, and an Advanced English or Italian module completes the plan. Elective slots are filled from two published lists. List 1 runs in the first semester and offers Advanced Statistics, Computational Physics, Particle Accelerators for science and interdisciplinary applications, Space Instruments, Quantum Mechanics, Materials Science, Advanced Particle Physics, Radioactivity, Gravitational Waves, Ionising Radiation for Medical Physics and Physics of Energy and the Environment. List 2 runs in the second semester and offers Gravitational Physics, Statistical Data Analysis, Optimization and Statistical Mechanics, Complex and Neural Networks, Nuclear Sciences and Applications and Neutron Physics and Neutron Instrumentation. Both lists also carry modules printed in Italian that may be taught in English on request. The third semester slot named Project can be used for an internship at a research centre or a private company, and the thesis can also be carried out outside the department.

Access is open. There is no cap on places and no entrance examination. An assessment of your curriculum and of your personal preparation is compulsory before you can enrol, and the Physics Department Council runs it. Graduates of the Italian degree class L-30 are admitted directly. Everyone else is assessed against minimum credits in named Italian subject sectors, and the board states how to make up anything missing, including by enrolling in single courses.

English is handled at university level, not by this degree. Tor Vergata accepts a B2 certificate from a recognised awarding body, or official evidence that English was the medium of instruction for your previous studies. If you have neither, the Language Centre runs an online English exam, written then oral, and issues a statement if you reach B2. No minimum IELTS or TOEFL score is published for this programme. Duolingo is not accepted. The Italian language test that Tor Vergata sets for its Italian taught master degrees does not apply to this curriculum, because it is taught in English.

The application costs 30 euro, paid through PagoPA, and it is not refundable. Students with a disability of 66 per cent or more, and Tor Vergata bachelor graduates with a final grade of at least 100 out of 110, are exempt. On tuition, the Student Handbook for 2026/2027 puts this degree in contribution class 1, the class for master degrees not named in any other class. None of the English taught programmes named in the higher classes is a physics degree. An international student whose income is earned abroad and who does not submit an ISEE Parificato pays a fixed annual all inclusive contribution of 1,000 euro, or 500 euro if they come from one of the countries the Italian ministry lists as developing. A student who does submit an ISEE Parificato is charged on class 1 instead, which at the ordinary rate runs from 0 to a maximum of 2,270 euro. On top of either figure, 156 euro of regional tax and stamp duty is due in any case, and it is the first instalment.

Classes for 2026/2027 start on 28 September 2026. International applicants apply on the Delphi system under Application to programmes taught in English, and print an acceptance letter from Delphi to begin the study visa application at the Italian diplomatic mission. Non-EU applicants living abroad must also pre-enrol on the Universitaly platform, uploading passport, photo, admission letter where provided, and the bachelor degree with the transcript of exams.
