Philology, literatures and history of the ancient world

The subject is the philology and history of the ancient world. Every student studies Greek and Latin language and literature, classical philology, and Greek and Roman history. Archaeology and medieval history are taught alongside them. The catalogue says the programme incorporates instruction in a foreign language.

The study plan lists three curricula. Two are taught in Italian. They are Filologico e letterario and Storico e medievistico. One is taught in English. It is called Classical Literature, History and Culture. That is why the catalogue prints the language of the programme as Italian, English.

The English curriculum carries 48 CFU of core modules. They are CLASSICAL LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES at 12 CFU, LATIN TEXTS AND THEIR TRADITION at 12 CFU, GREEK PHILOLOGY at 12 CFU, ANCIENT GREEK HISTORY at 6 CFU and ROMAN HISTORY at 6 CFU. A student then takes 24 CFU from one optional group of ten modules. That group is PAPYROLOGY, Greek Archaeology, ROMAN ARCHAEOLOGY, LANDSCAPE AND SEASCAPE ARCHAEOLOGY, ANCIENT VISUAL CULTURE, MEDITERRANEAN PREHISTORY AND PROTOHISTORY, HISTORY OF THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST, EARLY CHRISTIAN LITERATURE. CANONICAL AND APOCRYPHAL WRITINGS OF THE FIRST FOUR CENTURIES, DIGITAL HUMANITIES and COMPARATIVE LITERATURES. The remaining credits are an elective course at 18 CFU, APPRENTICESHIPS at 4 CFU, DIGITAL SKILLS at 2 CFU and the FINAL EXAM at 24 CFU. That totals 120 CFU. Two entries on this curriculum are marked ITA rather than ENG: the optional module DIGITAL HUMANITIES, and the FINAL EXAM.

Admission is open. The Italian course page prints the field Modalità di accesso as Verifica dei requisiti e della preparazione personale. Neither the English nor the Italian call states a number of places, a ranking list or a quota.

The procedure has four steps. You pay a 10,00 euro eligibility check fee on Infostud, entering code 34183. You wait for the result of the check. You sit a preliminary admission interview, which assesses personal knowledge. You then enrol by paying the first tuition instalment.

The eligibility check opens on 2 July 2026. For an applicant from a non-EU country who needs a student visa, 15 September 2026 is the only date available. The later dates of 15 October 2026, 17 November 2026 and 17 December 2026 are for other applicants. 14 January 2027 is reserved for students who already graduated from Sapienza or are about to.

The entry requirement is a bachelor's degree that already carries named credits. The call asks for at least 90 CFU in the sectors set by the programme regulations. Within those, at least 30 CFU must sit across Greek language and literature, Latin language and literature, and classical philology, with at least 12 CFU in each of the first two. It also asks for 6 CFU of Greek history, 6 CFU of Roman history and 6 CFU of Italian literature. An applicant who is short of credits may make them up by passing single examinations.

The language rule for this degree comes from its own call, not from the university wide sheet for English taught programmes. The call asks for B2 in a foreign language other than your mother tongue and other than the language your curriculum is taught in. You may choose English, Italian, French, Spanish or German. If your academic record or a certificate does not already show that level, the preliminary admission interview checks it. No IELTS, TOEFL or PTE minimum score is published for this degree.

Tuition follows the Sapienza scale for the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, which is the first contribution bracket. The standard rate is 2,821 euro a year, paid in three instalments. A student whose income is declared outside Italy pays a fixed amount set by country band instead. Sapienza lists Pakistan in Band A, which is 300 euro a year. Sapienza's admissions page states that full tuition for its bachelor's and master's programmes is 300 to 1500 euro a year according to country of residence.
