Neurobiology

Most teaching is in Italian. The study plan tags every module with a language. Seven modules carry the ENG tag: PSYCHOBIOLOGY WITH ELEMENTS OF PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY, NEUROPHARMACOLOGY OF MOTIVATIONAL PROCESSES, NEUROPSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY, EVOLUTIONARY ORIGINS OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR:A COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE, NEUROBIOLOGY OF MEMORY, DATA ANALYSIS and PROGRAMMING AND MACHINE LEARNING FOR BIOLOGICAL DATA. Every other module carries the ITA tag. The call states only that the course offers some teaching in English. Plan for Italian as the main language of study.

The first year is eight fixed modules of 6 CFU each. In the first semester: NEUROBIOLOGIA DELLO SVILUPPO, MECCANISMI DI TRASDUZIONE DEL SEGNALE, NEUROFISIOLOGIA CELLULARE and NEUROANATOMIA COMPARATA. In the second semester: NEUROBIOLOGIA MOLECOLARE, which splits into MODULO I and MODULO II of 3 CFU each, NEUROFISIOLOGIA DEGLI ORGANI DI SENSO, METODI DI NEUROSCIENZE COMPORTAMENTALI and PSYCHOBIOLOGY WITH ELEMENTS OF PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY.

The second year is built from three optional groups, and the student takes 6 CFU from each. Discipline OPZIONALI in ambito biomedico holds NEUROPHARMACOLOGY OF MOTIVATIONAL PROCESSES, NEUROSCIENZE DEI SISTEMI, NEUROPSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY, IMMUNOPATOLOGIA DELLE MALATTIE NEURODEGENERATIVE and CELLULE STAMINALI NELLO STUDIO DEL SISTEMA NERVOSO. Discipline OPZIONALI in ambito biomolecolare holds TERAPIA GENICA E NEUROSCIENZE, METODI BIOCHIMICI APPLICATI ALLA NEUROBIOLOGIA, which splits into MOD.1 and MOD.2 of 3 CFU each, and NEUROBIOLOGIA MOLECOLARE II. Discipline OPZIONALI in ambito affine e integrativo holds PSICOBIOLOGIA DELLO SVILUPPO, EVOLUTIONARY ORIGINS OF HUMAN BEHAVIOR:A COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE, PSICOLOGIA ANIMALE E COMPARATA, NEUROBIOLOGY OF MEMORY, NEUROSCIENZE COMPUTAZIONALI, DATA ANALYSIS and PROGRAMMING AND MACHINE LEARNING FOR BIOLOGICAL DATA.

The second year also carries 12 CFU of free student choice, printed as A SCELTA DELLO STUDENTE, plus TIROCINIO worth 3 CFU and PROVA FINALE worth 39 CFU. The final work is an experimental thesis only, written after a long period in a research laboratory, and it may be written in Italian or in English.

Admission is restricted. The 2026-2027 call opens 58 places for EU applicants and applicants holding an Italian residence permit, and 2 places for non EU applicants who need a study visa, one of the two reserved for Chinese nationals in the Marco Polo project. Selection is a comparative assessment of your qualifications plus an interview on your personal preparation in molecular and cell biology, genetics and biochemistry. You are exempt from that interview only if your bachelor sits in the Italian classes L-2 or L-13, or you hold the exact 90 CFU spread the call sets out, and your weighted exam average is above 24 out of 30. A candidate with a foreign qualification may be given a supplementary interview, which can be held online.

English is required at CEFR level B2. The call lists the certificates it accepts and the score for each. You can meet the requirement instead with at least 4 CFU of English language taught inside your bachelor. If you have neither, Sapienza calls you to an English interview, and missing that interview excludes you from the selection.

A non EU citizen applying for a study visa also needs Italian at B2. You prove it with a B2 Italian certificate from a body the MUR circular recognises, or by passing Sapienza's Italian test, which for 2026-2027 is held online. Pre-enrolment on Universitaly was due by 30 June 2026.

Applying costs 35,00 euro, paid on Infostud before you open the admissions platform, and it is never refunded. Tuition then depends on where you declare income. A student who declares income in Pakistan falls in Band A and pays a fixed 300 euro a year in three instalments, plus the regional tax and 16 euro of stamp duty. A student who files an Italian ISEE pays up to 2,924 euro, the standard rate for this faculty, and less at lower ISEE bands.
