A degree in Class 1 (Biotechnology) or Class 12 (Biological Sciences) of Ministerial Decree 509/1999, or in Class L-2 (Biotechnology) or Class L-13 (Biological Sciences) of Ministerial Decree 270/2004.
Or a first level degree comprising at least 90 ECTS credits from these scientific disciplinary sectors: from FIS/01 to FIS/08, from MAT/01 to MAT/09, from CHIM/01 to CHIM/03, CHIM/06, from BIO/01 to BIO/12, BIO/16, from BIO/18 to BIO/19, MED/04, MED/42.
For a foreign qualification, the assessment committee checks that your curriculum is equivalent to those requirements. It reviews your syllabuses and the marks in your final examinations, and it may hold a further interview in the core biological disciplines.
English at CEFR level B2 or above. You show it with a pass in an English Language course of at least 4 ECTS credits inside your bachelor's degree, or with a certificate from a body recognised by the MUR. If you have neither, you must sit the Sapienza English language proficiency test.

The degree runs two curricula under the same programme code. One is taught in Italian. One is taught in English. This record covers the English curriculum. That is why Sapienza prints the language of the programme as Italian and English.

The first semester of the first year has compulsory subjects in biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology. After that the programme divides into two tracks. One track is basic research. The other track is biomedical application. In the English curriculum the compulsory modules are Gene expression regulation of eukaryotes, taught as Mod I and Mod II and worth 12 CFU, Structure, Biosynthesis and Analysis of Proteins at 6 CFU, and Human Genetics at 6 CFU.

Optional modules are grouped into four sets: optionals from the biodiversity and environment sector, from the biomedical sector, from the biomolecular sector, and from the related and integrative sector. The optional modules published for the English curriculum are Cell Cycle, Intracellular trafficking, Molecular Oncology, Molecular and cellular physiology, Molecular Biology of Stem Cells, Molecular Methods, Methods in Human Genetics, Genome evolution, HIGH-RESOLUTION RNA BIOLOGY - CONCEPTS AND TOOLS, Pharmacology in drug discovery, COMPUTATIONAL METHODS IN BIOLOGY, Data analysis, BIOCHEMICAL BIOTECHNOLOGIES, which carries APPLIED BIOCHEMISTRY and MICROBIAL BIOTECHNOLOGIES: INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS, and PROGRAMMING AND MACHINE LEARNING FOR BIOLOGICAL DATA. The plan also carries a student choice slot of 6 CFU in each year, an internship of 3 CFU in the second year, and a final exam of 39 CFU in the second year. Sapienza states that the final exam is an original experimental project, written up as a thesis and discussed before a board.
