A three year bachelor's degree taught entirely in English that trains students to analyse biological data by computer, mixing biology, chemistry, mathematics, statistics and programming. It suits a science student who wants to write code for genomics and biomedical research rather than work at a laboratory bench.
Bioinformatics is a three year bachelor's degree at Sapienza Università di Roma. It is taught entirely in English. The programme code is 33455 and the degree class is L-2. It is an inter faculty degree, with Farmacia e Medicina as the lead faculty, and the administrative department is MEDICINA MOLECOLARE. Teaching is conventional and in person, in Rome.
The university's full description
The subject is the analysis of biological data by computer. Students learn to build computational models for biological sequences and gene expression data. The course covers genomes, transcriptomes, proteomes, epigenetic profiles, genetic polymorphisms and RNA and DNA editing. It also covers predicting the structure and function of large molecules and how they interact with drugs, using machine learning and artificial intelligence methods. The degree is built for students who will work next to a biologist or a doctor.
The three years run in order. The first year is 60 credits of mathematics, physics, chemistry, cell biology, statistics and computer science. The second year is 60 credits of molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, immunology and bioinformatics. The third year is 42 credits of bioethics, bioinformatics, genomics and elective exams, plus 18 credits for an internship tied to the final thesis, language skills and other preparation for work. The student must take 12 credits from a published list of elective exams. The final exam is a bioinformatics project carried out during the internship.
Access is restricted. The Italian decree that opened the 2026-2027 call announces a corso ad accesso programmato. For 2026-2027 there were 45 places for EU applicants and 5 places for non-EU applicants living abroad. Admission is by the CEnT-S, the CISIA English Test for Sciences. The call requires a total score of over 18 to enter the ranking. The test has 55 questions in five sections: mathematics, reasoning on texts and data, biology, chemistry and physics. Sapienza states that the English TOLC test is no longer accepted for this degree. A candidate who scores under 5 points in the mathematics section may still enrol but must clear an extra requirement, called an OFA, during the first year.
The English rule for this degree is CEFR level B2. Sapienza states that no certificate is mandatory for this programme. It recommends IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge English B2 First or Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English. No number is set for IELTS or TOEFL in this programme's entry. The call adds that you need B2 to sit the CEnT-S, because the test itself is in English. The minimum school grade is 75 out of 100.
Tuition depends on where you pay tax. A student who files an income tax return abroad pays a fixed yearly amount set by a country band. Pakistan is named in Band A, which is 300 euro a year. Band B is 700 euro and Band C is 1500 euro. A stamp duty of 16 euro and the regional tax are added on top. A student with Italian tax residence pays by ISEE instead.
The 2026-2027 route for an applicant living outside the EU is closed. That route ran through the QS MoveIn pre-selection platform and shut on 15 May 2026. Pre-selection costs 30 euro per application, a candidate may submit two applications per year, and there is no waiver. The route still open on 13 September 2026 is the EU quota. That quota is for EU citizens and for non-EU citizens who hold an Italian residence permit, and its application window closes on 17 September 2026.

No. Sapienza's admission requirements sheet says that for BSc Bioinformatics no certificates are mandatory. It asks for CEFR level B2 and recommends IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge English B2 First or Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English. No minimum score is printed for this degree. Duolingo is not on Sapienza's accepted test list.
I studied in English in Pakistan. Does that waive the English requirement?

What happens if I do badly in the maths section?
If you place inside the ranking but score under 5 points on the mathematics questions, you can still enrol, with an extra requirement called an OFA in mathematics. You clear it by passing the first module of the Principles of Mathematics exam, or a resit set by the programme, within your first year.
